Surrounded By Scraps

Surrounded By Scraps was Charlotte Hawks' mystery quilt from 2 years ago.  I finished it up, but it sat for a long time because I didn't like it.  I used a soft gray print as the background, and it made the whole thing look dull, even with all my bright scraps.  I decided to try and fix it with a colorful border.  I put it all up on my design wall yesterday, and already I can tell that this is an improvement.

I used fabric from my scrap trash, huge bins of unsorted, wadded up fabric, and unorganized bits leftover from other projects or given to me.  There has been no obvious change in the amount of scraps in my scrap trash bins.

I want to commit to 15 minutes a day of sorting scraps.  Not cutting, just getting them out of the scrap trash into the right color boxes and throwing out things that are too small to use.  After making Wild and Goosey, I started saving very small scraps.  This is just not practical, given the state of my health.  I don't think I have enough time left to make another one of these!

Yes I'm liking the colourful scrappy border on the quilt.
What a great idea to spend 15 mins a day sorting the scrap box.. MAY do that too.

I think this is looking really great with the border! I know, isn't it crazy how you can make a whole quilt and not see a difference in the scrap level? I'm trying to make several scrap quilts this year.

Yep, time to ditch the itty bitty scraps and make more room for the bigger scraps. I recently started separating my scraps into paper gift bags. I'm eventually going to buy gift colored gift bags in the color of the scraps -- red in a red bag, blue in a blue.... Then I will have to clean off one of my upper bookshelf to display the bags on. At least the pretty colored bags are the plan. I figure a dollar store will have some. And, yep the border really helps brighten the overall quilt.
