Carolina Christmas, Continued

I started Bonnie Hunter's Carolina Christmas last fall.  I got all the poinsettia blocks done then.

This week I finished the 108 fox units and the 104 geese units.

Four fox and geese blocks will go together to make Carolina Star blocks.

I love this quilt, but I wish this pattern said which way to press the seams.  I'd like to have all  the seams nest when I join the poinsettia blocks and  the Carolina Star blocks, but I'm not sure I'm smart enough to do it without some guidance.

A Finish By Proxy

I've been at my parents house all week helping my mom take care of my dad.  He fell a month ago, broke bones in his face and got a concussion.  Then while he was in the hospital, he had prostate issues, a bladder infection and got pneumonia.  On top of everything else, he has dementia.  He spent time in ICU, a regular hospital bed and then 3 weeks in a woefully understaffed rehab facility that was not equipped to handle dementia patients.  My mom brought him home last week.

My siblings in town have been helping my mom, but she still has to hire sitters at night because my dad does not sleep at night ( he doesn't sleep much during the day either).  He has to be watched constantly to be sure he doesn't fall again or pull on his catheter.  He is getting much better care at home than he was in rehab, but it is a lot of work.

My 76-year-old mom is handling things better than you can imagine.  She does most of the work, but she asks for help when she needs it, and is maintaining her social life too.  She is having a handicapped bathroom put in downstairs, so she can keep my dad at home as long as possible.   A nurse, OT, PT, CNA and speech therapist come to the home several times a week too, and I think having their support  keeps her going.

So I haven't done any quilting at all this week.  But Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict finished my Baby Celtic Solstice for charity, and you can see it on her blog:  http://confessionsofafabricaddict.blogspot.com/2014/06/can-i-get-whoop-whoop-little-more.html
I like the bright yellow and blue borders she added.

Stash Report, Scrap Cutting

I have some stash in this week because I went to a fat quarter sale at my LQS.  Fat Quarters were $1.5, and I bought just four:  2 green for the quilt I'm working on now, one neutral for the same quilt and one orange to replenish my stash.  I think I used good restraint.  At $1.50 each, I could have gotten several more!

Used This Week: 6.5 yard (Making History Quilt)
Used Year to Date: 56.75 yards
Added this week: 1 yards
Added year to date: 45.125 yards
 Net Used: 11.625 yards

I have a lot of blue and white left over from Making History.  I originally bought about 0.125 more of each print than the pattern suggested.  I think I have enough left to make a couple of pillow cases.

I started watching the World Cup this week with my son who plays soccer.  I'm really not much for sports, especially sports on TV, but I got out my red, green and neutral scraps and started cutting for my Carolina Christmas quilt while the games were on.

I really enjoyed watching Spain vs.  the Netherlands while I was cutting!  And I was glad to see Brazil getting some rain.  My brother in Brazil said they are in the midst of a bad drought and may release the 'dead' underground water to meet demand.

Making History Top

I finished getting Swirly Girls' Making History quilt top done this week.  It was hard to photograph because it is so big, and I don't have a good place to lay it out. I made several attempts, but unless I drag the step ladder upstairs, this is as good as I can get it.

This quilt is  84x101 inches and is a combination of Martha Washington star blocks and sawtooth star blocks.  If you look closely, you will see that my inner pinwheels aren't all spinning the right way.  Too bad!  That's the way it is going to stay.

This quilt will be either a graduation gift or a wedding quilt, I think.  I anticipate a couple of family friends to make big life changes in the next couple of years, and I want to have at least one quilt ready for them.

June Gypsy Wife Blocks

I got my June Gypsy Wife blocks done early this month!

Crazy Anne (the big block) is a mess.  I accidentally reversed the rectangular triangles, but the block is close enough to 10 1/2 inches, that I'm not redoing it.  No one other than a Gypsy Wife purist notice the problem when it's in the finished quilt.

It would have been helpful if the directions would have said which section these blocks will occupy in the completed quilt.  I've been trying to figure that out as I go along, but there are several blocks that don't have a home yet.  If you know what section the following blocks belong in, please clue me in.

June Flowers

I haven't done a good job this year of tracking my flowers.  I used to post a picture when something in my yard bloomed because I like keeping track of that and seeing how it varies from year to year.
Here's what my backyard looks like this week.

I have Stella de Oro daylilies galore.  Splitting them last year was a good idea.  They are blooming a lot better this year than they did last.

The bee balm just started blooming this week.  The orange butterfly weed started blooming last week;  the yellow butterfly weed just opened up today.  The butterfly bushes don't have buds yet, but they are bigger and fuller than usual thanks to all the rain we've had.

A friend gave me a butterfly house and some seeds for Christmas this year.   This part of my yard is sunny most of the day, and I've started planting a butterfly garden here.  I want this patch to become a certified monarch way station.  http://www.monarchwatch.org/waystations/

I have a couple of varieties of milkweed here.  The nursery I use here said their supplier had butterfly weed 'crop failure', and they won't be getting any orange butterfly weed in until August.  I planted swamp milkweed, which should bloom pink.  I also have Joe Pye weed ( Little Joe),  a few daylilies, zinnias, horsemint, Mexican flame vine, lantana in the pot on the bench (not blooming yet), and the shortest bee balm I've ever seen.

You can see the remains of my irises to the left.  They didn't look so good this year because I split them 2 years ago and didn't replant very  many.  I gave a lot of  them to my friend Amy, who had great luck with them.

She is looking for a home for some of hers.  She said I gave her 50 irises, and now she has 80!

Baby Celtic Solstice, Stash Report

I started out making a king sized Celtic Solstice quilt, but after I got all the blocks made, I changed my mind and made quilts for the bunk beds.

Here is top bunk:

Just Add Borders

I got the inside of Making History done yesterday.

It just needs a white inner border and then the blue outer border. I like this quilts, but  I like the color riot you get with scrap quilts better.  This quilt is going to be pretty but a little boring.  The prints are fun:  seahorses, shells, crabs, anchors, sailboats, and lighthouses. My husband thinks this quilt looks masculine because there are no flowers in it.

Design Floor Monday

I have 2 close-to-completed quilt tops on my design floor today.

Making History, the blue quilt, needs 4 white star blocks, setting triangles and borders.

Baby Celtic Solstice will be 5 by 5 blocks eventually.  The rows are all done.  They just need to be sewn to each other.
