I want to explore my idea from my last post that the most successful scrap quilts have small pieces.
This spider web quilt is one of my favorites:
The webs are about 9 inches across.
I liked it so much I decided to make another spider web quilt, this time with bigger webs, about 16 inches across, the better to use up scraps. Unfortunately, I just don't like this one, maybe because of the bigger webs, maybe because of the gray background. It has been hanging in my closet, waiting to be quilted for several years.
Another scrap quilt with small pieces, Scrap in A Box, works for me even though I used some of my oldest and ugliest fabrics. There are many unattractive prints in this quilt, but there are no big pieces of ugly fabric that draw attention to themselves. The uglies are cut in little triangles and no one even notices there is a pink print fabric with black and white cows.
My zipper quilt doesn't work as well. I like from a distance. Up close it is a mess! No one ever looks at this one and says they love it. Not that I blame them. I made it, and even I don't love it! My zipper quilt is always called 'interesting' or 'unusual' or even 'a great use of scraps'.
I will probably continue to make scrap quilts, and I'm sure I'll make another ugly scrap quilt again. My goal will be to make fewer ugly ones.
