Stash Report and Finish-A-Long Update

A boring Stash Report this week since I didn't add or use anything this week.

Used this week: 0 yards
Used year to date: 32.5 yards
Added this week: 0 yards
Added year to date: 16.25 yards
Net used for 2012: -16.25 yards

I have been cutting scraps, though, getting ready to make a snail trail quilt with stars for my BIL. My husband is pretty good about not making comments when the dining room table looks like this for days on end.

I made a sample block for my quilt, but I'm not really happy with it because it is not quite the right size, and it really isn't square.   I need more practice.  Fortunately, I have a lot of scraps to practice on.
Just a friendly warning:  don't google snail trail without adding 'quilt block', or you will get quite an education!

All three of my finish-a-long projects are complete.  There was just a little bit of cross stitching  and back stitching left to do on this, so it is hard to see the progress.

                                                                 Before

                                                                            After

My Orca Bay top is done.  My king sized quilt is quilted and bound. Maybe I should have chosen 4 projects instead of 3 to get done this quarter.  But now that I have completed 3 UFOs, it feels like I have month to play, and I like that.

Mid Atlantic Quilt Festival

Today I drove down to Hampton for the Mid Atlantic Quilt Festival.  I met 5 of the rock stars of the podcasting quilt world:  Tanesha (Crafty Garden Mom), AJ (The Quilting Pot), Frances (The Off Kilter Quilt), Pam (Hip To Be a Square) and Sandy (Quilting  For the Rest of Us).  They are all as nice in person as they sound of their podcasts.  It was fun to put a face with a voice.

Several other podcast groupies also met up with the podcasters. I met 2 women from Virginia Beach and two from Northern VA. We all ate lunch together and then went downstairs and sat in a circle while Sandy recorded a podcast. We talked about maybe having a get together again next year or some sort of retreat.

The quilt show itself was great! I enjoyed seeing all vendor's booths, but I didn't buy a thing. I was tempted by the little purse frames that I've used in the past to make small beaded bags. I also liked the quilting chests with glass sides. They were a way to display folded up quilts; you could see the quilts, but they were protected from dirt by the glass case. There were several booths with wool felt kits and patterns.  I liked many of them but I used restraint because I have oodles of fabric and other needlework supplies.  I don't need another hobby right now!

I did my best to see all the quilts on display.  There was a good mix of art quilts and traditional bed quilts. Most were well above my skill level, but there some that were pretty simple.  Lots of applique, some embroidery and thread-painting.  I don't remember seeing anything very modern (as in the white or gray backgrounds with simple piecing).

I'm fighting a sinus infection right now, and the quilt show wore me out today!

The podcasters passed around pictures of their families, kids, and pets.  I didn't have any pictures of my kids with me, even on my phone, but here are my boys:

The one in the black shirt is my oldest, the one with the long hair is the middle child, and the youngest has spiked hair.

Circle of Geese

I've never done much paper piecing before, but I really like flying geese in a circle, so I googled and found a pattern on this site http://piecebynumber.com/circleofgeese.htm.   It took me about 2 hours and 15 minutes to make this trial block, including ripping off the paper.

I  used purple scraps and some of the kona snow I bought last week.  I'm thinking about using this block  in my jubilee quilt, but I wouldn't make a whole quilt from these blocks.  I want my jubilee quilt to be fun, and this block is too labor intensive.  Want to make your own jubilee quilt? Stash Report

Do floppy quilts count in the stash report?  I have decided that, for me, the answer is yes.  The Stash Report keeps count of fabric used, and once it is in the top, that fabric is used whether or not the quilting is done.

This week I bought 3 yds of kona snow to play with and 10  half-priced fat quarters for my BIL's quilt.

Stash Report:
Used this week: 21.0 yards
Used year to date: 32.5 yards
Added this week: 5.25 yards
Added year to date: 16.25 yards
Net used for 2012: -16.25 yards

No quilting pictures today, but here's a picture of a Sue Hillis cross stitch piece I made for my husband's office.

Big A$$ Quilt!

I just finished putting the binding on my king sized quilt. I bound it by machine, and it took 2 1/2 hours to do, but I had no mistakes to rip out.

It is 116x116 inches, and it is really too big for my bed.  But it will be going on the bed anyway!  I tucked the bottom border under in this picture.

I like how long it hangs over the sides, but I could have cut 20 inches off the length.

I learned how to miter a border, how to do fusible applique, and how do do a bargelo pattern on this quilt.  I still need to wash it, but I wanted to try and get a picture of the quilting.  It looks like loopy feathers.

Most of the fabric is Bar Harbour by Minnick and Simpson.  This quilt is the third and final finish for this quarter in the FAL.

Orca Bay Top Done!

\
My Orca Bay top is finally complete!  This top was part of my 3 FAL projects, and I'm very glad to have it finished.  I thought the interior of the quilt was fussy, but the outer borders went on perfectly.

Baby Quilts Complete

I finished binding and washing the baby quilts yesterday.  The one for Olivia has an orange back.

The quilting pattern is 'Spilt Paint'.  It is a large loopy meander.  Sofia's quilt has a blue back.

Both quilts were bound by machine for durability.  I want the girls to be able to drag them around and not worry about them.  My machine binding isn't as good as my hand binding, but my machine binding will never improve unless I bind more quilts that way.

Orca Bay Super Bowl Sew-In

Football is one of the least interesting sports to me, so instead of watching the game yesterday, I worked on Orca Bay,  The center is complete!  Here are a couple of close ups, so you can see my scrap variety.

If Holly and Jodi look closely, they will be able to find some of the scraps they gave to me.  I told you I'd use them! If this quilt didn't already have a name, I'd call it 'A Million Little Pieces'.  Now to the border.  I've seen several quilts where the inner border is black or blue, and I like that better than the white used in the original, so I'm going to check my stash and make a decision this week.

My stash report this week should look familiar to you since it is the same as last week's.  I just got 3 quilts back from the longarmer, so as soon as the bindings go on, I will have something new to report.  I thought about making a pillow case just so I could see the net used go down this week.

Time and Season

I finally got Moria Blackburn's 'Time and Season' completed this week.  This  round robin is over 2 years old!
I belong to the Friends In Thread stitching group, the most reliable round robin group I've ever stitched with. Our group has been doing round robins and exchanges for about six and a half years now.  I consider these ladies my friends even though I've only met a few in person.  Many thanks to Kathy (Canada); Dane, Gaby, Gaby's mom (all Germany), Jodi (Wisconsin), Cheryl (Iowa) and Nancy (California) for all their work on my round robin.

Look at the back:

These ladies are as careful with each other's pieces as the are with their own.  I don't have to worry about any stray threads showing through the front when this is framed.  A couple of close ups of the stitching I did to finish it up:

Backstitching on the grapevine.

                                                                  Flower vine on bottom row.

Everyone who stitched on this RR, put her initials in the bottom border.  I am so happy to have this done!

And if you aren't sick of hat pictures by now, here's another chemo cap.  I love the colors in this one.  This is a super simple pattern, all stockinette stitch.

February Gold

While I was out of town, my daffodils started blooming!  This is an early variety called February Gold, but they don't always bloom this early.
