Stash Report, Fun Mail

Used This Week: 7.25 yard
Used Year to Date: 30 yards
Added this week:  0
yards
Added year to date: 38 yards
 Net added: 8 yards

A couple of weeks ago, I participated in a linky party for Scraptastic Tuesday on Leanne's blog, She Can Quilt ( http://www.shecanquilt.ca/ ).  I was the lucky winner of a gift card from Sew Me a Song, an etsy shop based in Camden, Maine (www.sewmeasong.etsy.com). Sew Me A Song carries Japanese prints from Yuwa and Lecien as well as text, low volume and quirky prints. It too me a while to choose what I wanted,  but a fat quarter bundle of bright polka dots kept calling to me, and Becca sent along a bonus fat eighth.   Thanks, Becca!

Some of you may notice that even with the addition of these fat quarters, I did not account for any fabric added in my stash report.  Why?  Because I do not count fabric gifts as fabric added.  Why?  Because that's what I choose to do! My main goal in tracking my stash is to keep me aware of how much fabric I BUY.  Accepting other peoples scraps and fabric gifts doesn't cost me anything other than space.

Easy Street Quilted

I had Easy Street longramed this week.  The back of the quilt is all pinwale corduroy scraps from the backings of other quilts.

The quilting pattern shows up better on the back than the front.  It is a loose swirl, one step up in price from a meander.  It was still  expensive to have this quilt done as it is so large.

Here's the front.  I'll probably bind it in orange.   I think I'm keeping this one even though it doesn't go with anything in my house.  It is not king size, but it is a generous queen size, big enough to use under the quilt on my bed, and the corduroy will make it warm.

Sleepy Hollow Revisited

I haven't been a regular cross stitcher since I started quilting, but I have a few projects I've been making slow progress on.  Here is what Sleepy Hollow looked like in January of 2014:

I've been trying to spend more time downstairs in the evenings with my husband instead of up in my sewing room alone, so I've been getting more stitching done.

It's getting harder and harder to take a good picture of this piece because it is so wide.

Stash Report, Using Scraps

Used This Week: 1  yard  (sent to Jen for Fat Quarter Lotto)
Used Year to Date: 22.75 yards
Added this week:  14.75
yards (Gravity Quilt Kit)
Added year to date: 38 yards
 Net added: 15.25 yards

Here's what my Wild and Goosey looks like so far:

I have 26 W&G blocks, 18 alternate blocks and 50 W&G units sewn.  The worst part of this quilt is going to be removing the paper from all those W&G blocks!

I've also completed 38 red string blocks for Talkin' Turkey.  Twenty-two to go.

Project of Doom 2 Update

I haven't done a ton of sewing this week, but I've been working on my second Project of Doom quilt.  The bookcase is done:

I am pleased with the bookcase, but the objects on top still need some work.  In particular, because the bookcase is brown, and Fawks' stand is brown, and Riddle's diary is brown, there is no place in this quilt for a brown hat.  Too much brown!  I think a black hat will be better.  I will finish the brown hat block and send it to Jennifer who can use it in a charity quilt.

Gravity Pattern Give Away

I have been admiring Jaybird Quilt's new block of the month, Gravity since last fall.  http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/2015/03/gravity-quilt-block-colors-block-1.html

I've seen it all over the internet and in a local quilt shop, but I have so much going on I wasn't going to commit to doing it. I already had the Hex n More ruler, though, and about a month ago I bought the pattern.  Then  I ended up ordering the kit when I found it for 20% off, so now I have two Gravity patterns.

If any of you would like my extra pattern, just leave me a comment by Sunday, March 22.   If more than one person wants it, I'll draw names for it.   There is a Gravity SAL that starts in mid-April, and I want to get the pattern sent out in time for that.  I'll ship internationally if someone outside the states wins.

UPDATE:  I've started to get my first spam comments on this blog tonight, so I just activated the comment moderation feature of blogger.  Hated to do it, but I was getting one comment on every post, at a rate of one a minute.

March 24. 2015:  Vicki was the lucky winner of the Gravity pattern.

POD2

My design wall is currently a piece of black flannel that I can drag from my son's old bedroom into my bedroom where my sewing machine is set up.  I have the inside of the Project of Doom bookcase done.

Time to build the bookcase!

Stash Report, Luck Be With You

I added one fat quarter this week and used a small part of it to back a pincushion for my Irish friend Sue.

It feels good to be cross stitching again!

First Daffodil!

I'm so excited to see the first daffodil of the season!

This variety of daffodil is February Gold, and they usually do bloom here in February, sometimes even in January.  For me, this means spring is really going to come this year.  I hope we are done with the snow!

I've been working on Charlotte's Scrap In a Box mystery quilt this week.  Here is this month's clue:

I suspect the triangles are setting pieces.  I was playing around with my units and came up with these 4 block options.

I like the first way the best, but I'll put it together the way Charlotte does.  My quilt is going to be super scrappy, and I using up some of my oldest, ugliest and smallest scraps.

Quilt Love

As Linus used to say, 'Happiness is a thumb and a blanket'.  I'm glad this quilt is being used!

Stash Report, Border Adoption

I sent my unused Carolina Christmas border to Joy this week, so I have some yardage used to report. I also took my Easy Street top to the longarmer.  It should be done in 3-4 weeks.  I wasn't crazy about this top just after I finished piecing it, but it is growing on me.  I already counted the fabric in the top as used way back in 2013, but the backing was all from my stash too, and that hasn't been counted yet.

If I can stay out of the quilt shops, I'll be in net used territory soon.

A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That

We got snow/sleet/ice again this week, and the kids got two more snow days.  This makes 9 so far this year.  Since the roads were bad, I stayed home and sewed.

I'm not sure how many of these Wild and Goosey units I made this week, but I've got 50 more done.  When I have 100, I'll start sewing them into blocks.

I also worked on POD2.  I've got the interior blocks sewn in rows and am working on the items that sit on top of the bookcase.  I finished my POD3 block of the week.

I've been using the Talkin Turkey string blocks as leaders and enders.  I have  24  done so far.  Thirty-six more to go.

I spent all day yesterday cutting up scraps.

And I have hope that spring is coming.  My Lenten Rose is blooming.

Bins of Color

Yesterday I wasn't in the mood to sew.  I decided to watch and old movie and sort my scraps instead.  My fabric is mostly arranged by color, but things get mixed up as I cut and throw things back  into  the wrong bins. I'm not much for organizing!

My cutting table is my dining room table, so when I cut, I carry the bins I need downstairs and cut there.  Most of my 'cleaning up' involves my throwing fabric back into any available bin and hauling it upstairs because we need the table for a big dinner.  About once a year, I sort most of my fabric back into its proper bin.

This time, one of the bins has mostly batiks and one has weird fabrics that seem to belong to no other bin.  This is about 80% of my stash.  I probably have about 20 yards of uncut fabric and some 100% cotton shirts I plan to make quilts out of.  After I did the sorting, I was ready to sew.  I worked on Wild and Goosey a little and then started the string blocks for Talkin' Turkey.

Twelve down, 48 to go!

Stash Report

I went to a half price fat quarter sale this week and got more fabric for my third Project of Doom.  I was very low on whites and grays.  I like to use a variety of fabric in these quilts and try not to repeat the fabric of the books.  I am considering not embroidering the titles on these books this time.  It takes a lot of time to do and takes me away from my cross stitching.  There isn't enough time in a day to do everything, and many quilters make this quilt without titles.  I'm  usually an overachiever, though,  so this decision makes me very uncomfortable.  How stupid is that?

Here are some of my POD3 blocks without book titles.
