Fall Panel OBW

I  don't think I have blogged about this quilt yet.  My friends Jen and Kate got me 7 Northcott panels when a LQS was having a big sale last year.  I wish I would have taken pictures of the original panel, but I can't find one.  Here is the quilt I made from the panels:

This quilt is 56"X 53".

I usually put an original, uncut panel on the back of my OBWs, but I had to cannibalize the 7th one to get enough of the brown to finish the front.  I was able to use some wide back Northcott that I had left over from a different quilt.

Denise Zapf of Quilting Mojo did the longarming.  She chose the pattern, which is full of swirls, and looks great on the quilt.  It is very hard to photograph, though, because the beautiful brown King Tut thread disappears on both the front and the back.

Summer Stars At Fawn Lake

I have been working on this quilt for so long, I can't even remember if the name of it is Summer Stars At Fawn Lake or Summer Stars On Fawn Lake or Summer Stars Over Fawn Lake.  I think I have referred to it as all three of these!  In any event, I put a border on this quilt this weekend, and now it feels done to me.  Except for the quilting, of course.

This is a big quilt.  With the borders it is 93"x 105", a little small for our king bed, a little large for our queen.  Maybe one of my sibling can use it.

Rainbow Scrap Challenge, Yellow

It's been a long time since I have been a regular participant in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  I have made a lot of string blocks during this challenge that I have yet to put together.  I have also made an Inverted Star Quilt with RSC blocks:

Last week, I pulled out my yellow scrap bin and made blocks for Melissa Corey's End of the Rainbow Quilt.  This is the cover quilt for her book Irish Chain Quilts.  I asked for it for Christmas several years ago but have never made anything from  it .  The cover quilt is my favorite in the book, but there are others that I really like.

This quilt would be quick to make except that the colored pieces are all cut from fabric made of scraps.  This added step slows down the process quite a bit and adds bulk to the seams, but I love the improv look of the patches.

Fingers crossed that I get the other blocks made during this RSC.

Red and White Hunter's Star, Quilted and Bound

I am making progress on red and white quilts for my foyer.  Here is the second one, quilted and bound:

This Hunter's Star quilt was made using Deb Tucker's Rapid Fire Hunter Star Ruler.  It was a big help for my accuracy and speed of piecing.  There is some waste, but I have more fabric than time, so that is ok with me.  This is a small quilt, 42" x 52".

For some reason, the backing looks pink in this picture, but it is the same Bella Solid Christmas Red as the front.  Vicki Johnson of Threads that Bind Us did the longarming, and she chose the cardinal pantograph.  One of my next projects needs to be to label my red and white quilts,  so I can remember who did the quilting on them.  Since I have been working at the quilt shop, I have used several different quilters.

I have room for at least 3 more red and white quilts.

Surrounded By Scraps, Top Done

I'm so happy to have this quilt top done and off my design wall.    I like getting scraps used up. It makes me feel virtuous that all of my scraps won't end up in a landfill. It is just hard for me to be enthusiastic about a quilt I don't love.  Sometimes if I put is away for a while, I like it better. Sometimes getting it quilted changes my mind about it. Maybe it will grow on me.

This quilt is 70"x87".  I'm planning to piece together some big scraps for the backing.

First Daffodil

Since I started blogging in 2012, have been keeping track of when the first daffodil in my yard blooms.  Yesterday, February 18, 2019 was the day.  The same day as last year.  Some years I will have a lone daffodil for a week or so.  This year I already have two more almost open and several more buds ready to go.

Surrounded By Scraps

Surrounded By Scraps was Charlotte Hawks' mystery quilt from 2 years ago.  I finished it up, but it sat for a long time because I didn't like it.  I used a soft gray print as the background, and it made the whole thing look dull, even with all my bright scraps.  I decided to try and fix it with a colorful border.  I put it all up on my design wall yesterday, and already I can tell that this is an improvement.

I used fabric from my scrap trash, huge bins of unsorted, wadded up fabric, and unorganized bits leftover from other projects or given to me.  There has been no obvious change in the amount of scraps in my scrap trash bins.

I want to commit to 15 minutes a day of sorting scraps.  Not cutting, just getting them out of the scrap trash into the right color boxes and throwing out things that are too small to use.  After making Wild and Goosey, I started saving very small scraps.  This is just not practical, given the state of my health.  I don't think I have enough time left to make another one of these!

Summer Stars On Fawn Lake

Summer Stars on Fawn Lake has sat in a box for many months. This was last year's mystery quilt by Charlotte Hawks.  I pulled it out this week and finally got the top together.  All I needed to do was to sew 7 rows together.

I used  a lot of odd balls and ugly fabric in this quilt.  This quilt is ok. I like that I got to use up scraps, but the top isn't something I'm excited about finishing.  Sometimes when I feel this way about a quilt my longarmer can fix it.

It is a big quilt (84"x96") already, but I think it would look better with some sort of border.  I am used to more dense piecing, and it doesn't seem finished to me yet.

Good Fortune, Top Done

I got the last 5 border pieces on my Good Fortune.  Hurray!  The top is done!!!

This top is 71"x 71".  I thought long and hard about adding another border or two to make it bed sized.  So far I have resisted the temptation.  I just need to get it to the longarmer before I change my mind.

Whenever I finish a BH mystery, I get a huge feeling of accomplishment.

Sedona, February

Sedona's February row was super easy, I guess to make up for how time consuming January's was.  I am sewing them together as I go.  February's row is the with the white zig zag on red.

Under the Sedona rows you can see part of Good Fortune, Bonnie Hunter's mystery.  I have 9 of the 16 border pieces sewn on.

Good Fortune, 3 Borders to Go

I think that the final link for Bonnie Hunter's Good Fortune is coming up soon, so I want to check in.  All the blocks are together, and one border is on.  I am happy with the colors I chose.  I like them as much as Bonnie's.  Sometimes, I am not as lucky with my colors, especially in a mystery quilt.

I have the other borders ready to go, but I can't get motivated to sew them on.  I may have to play the game of one side a day until it is done.  There are so many other quilts I want to work on!

Treasure Hunt, Quilted and Bound

It has taken me almost a month to get this quilt bound, but it is now officially my first quilt finish of 2019.

I took it outside in an attempt to get truer color, but you still can't tell that the binding and part of the cubes are  purple grunge.

The quilt was made using the one block wonder technique.  I put a piece of the original fabric on the back.  This is Treasure Hunt by Marcia Derse.

Vicki Johnson of Threads That Bind Us did the longarming.   Again, I can't get the true color of the fabric. The backing is not as blue as it is in the last picture and not as gray as it is in this one.  My camera has problems with purples.

The quilt  is 68"x 76".  I don't know yet who will get this one. We really have more quilts in this house than we need, but all my boys like this one, so I may have to keep it.
