Gypsy Wife Reboot

I pulled out Gypsy Wife last night.  This project has been packed away for a long time now because the pattern is confusing to me.  I am used to Bonnie Hunter's clear directions and diagrams and had a hard time following the Gypsy Wife pattern.  I was attracted to the pattern because the setting is unlike any other quilt I've seen. I also wanted to use up scraps.  I joined an online quilt along and kept up with the blocks last year.

The problem is that once the blocks are made, you need to figure out where they go.  There are diagrams that divide the quilt into sections, but there aren't enough  measurements on the diagrams to determine exactly where the blocks belong.  I think just having a note saying something like ,' these blocks go in sections 1, 7  and 9 would solve the problem'.  Now it's like figuring out a jigsaw puzzle.  This was an expensive pattern  (over $20 for one pattern!), and I expect better directions when I pay that kind of money. This is my last Jen Kingwell quilt, not because I don't like her quilts, but because I don't like her patterns.

Here is a very rough cut of section one:

Gypsy Wife is on my someday list too and I've hesitated because of the cost of the pattern. Good luck with the assembly! At least once it's done, you'll have a gorgeous quilt.

It's so frustrating to have hard-to-understand instructions. GW is such a nifty design. Hope you'll be pleased with the result.

Thanks for the feedback! I've admired this quilt as well, and the cost did put me off. I'd rather spend the money on a Bonnie Hunter quilt, and I could probably figure most of it out myself anyway.

That is so frustrating! I really hate it when patterns don't work or have mistakes in them. Maybe you can improv your way to a finish?

I heard the same comments around a quilting table last night. There have been quite a few finishes as of late, and I've been tempted to start yet another quilt. I agree it's frustrating to spend money on something that proves difficult to use.

It is inspiring to see everyone's Gypsy wife quilts and i was tempted too Laura. For me, the whole point of using a pattern instead of making your own design is to be able to just jump right into the sewing and not have to figure out the details. Well - once you get that puzzle figured out, you'll have a beautiful quilt at least.
