I want to explore my idea from my last post that the most successful scrap quilts have small pieces.
This spider web quilt is one of my favorites:
The webs are about 9 inches across.
Another scrap quilt with small pieces, Scrap in A Box, works for me even though I used some of my oldest and ugliest fabrics. There are many unattractive prints in this quilt, but there are no big pieces of ugly fabric that draw attention to themselves. The uglies are cut in little triangles and no one even notices there is a pink print fabric with black and white cows.
My zipper quilt doesn't work as well. I like from a distance. Up close it is a mess! No one ever looks at this one and says they love it. Not that I blame them. I made it, and even I don't love it! My zipper quilt is always called 'interesting' or 'unusual' or even 'a great use of scraps'.
I will probably continue to make scrap quilts, and I'm sure I'll make another ugly scrap quilt again. My goal will be to make fewer ugly ones.

Scrappy quilts are also my favorites. I really like your zipper quilt. I like that the light and dark sections are separate. At first glance it reminded me of railroad tracks. It just might need a different name for you to love it. It would be perfect for a little person to run their cars on the "roads".
I love your take on scrap quilts and totally agree with you. I think your zipper quilt looks good too. I think the spiderweb with the lighter background is just happier and as Bonnie Hunter says, if the fabric is still ugly, you haven't cut it small enough yet. They are all useful and fun in my book. Keep it up. I have at least 100 scrap quilt ideas bouncing around all the time.
I think you are quite right about this: scrap quilts can swallow even the ugliest of little scraps but if the bits are big it is somehow harder to get the balance right.
Yep, you are definitely on to something here.
