I started this quilt as soon as I found out about selvage quilts. I hadn't been saving my selvages for very long, though, so I didn't really have enough to make a quilt. A few quilty friends started saving their selvages for me, and now I have a tub of them. But in making this quilt, I've found I don't really enjoy string piecing selvages.
So this quilt sat and sat, four blocks complete, until I worked up the energy to sew two more. It really didn't take that long to complete, and the string piecing wasn't as bad as I remembered. I got to use up an ugly red print on the borders and sashing. I'm not sure where it came from, but their are teeny, tiny white flowers with red centers and green leaves on a red background. From a distance, it almost looks pink. This must have been a scrap from someone else. (Because I don't think I'd actually buy something this ugly!) Before I started quilting, I used to work in a fabric shop. This print looks like vintage 1985 to me! The selvage, what there is left of it, says 'copyright Peter Pan fabric'.
On a design note, if I really cared about this quilt, I'd change the 2 dark cornerstones to something less 'in your face'. But now I just want this done. This is a utility quilt that may go to college with my son.
I felt an obligation to get this one done because I just bought a ton of fabric for another Harry Potter quilt. When I finished the first one, I didn't think I could do another. Embroidering the book titles
by hand almost did me in. When I reflect back on this, though, I realize my main issue was trying to finish the whole thing in 3 months. If I take my time, say one block a week, maybe it won't be such an ordeal. At least that's the mind game I'm going to play. If you missed my first Project of Doom, here's my finished quilt.

Now I'm really jealous! Love the selvage quilt. I finally realized a selvage quilt just wasn't in my forecast, but I do love seeing them. Your bookcase quilt is super.
I always admire selvage quilted projects too. Perhaps you might like making them into smaller items? I think it turned out great! Love your bookshelf quilt too!
I love your selvedge quilt! It is quite perfect just the way it is!!
I like the selvage quilt and admire your perseverance. I know how hard it is to make yourself finish something. And the Harry Potter quilt is amazing.
Congrats on finishing something that wasn't that fun or pretty to you. That's the most difficult thing to keep going on, and you did it!
Love your selvage quilt. I have a small bag of selvage edges and was thinking of starting to make a few blocks as a leader-ender project. I think I'll make it a small quilt though. Sounds like you found a larger quilt was too much work.
Congrats on a great finish - love it! It is hard to move on & finish a quilt or project you just aren't quite in love with so with that - I say job well done on this finish!
The selvedge quilt is great. I have a friend who is making a spider web quilt with selvedges. I've donated as many as I can find. I really need to get started back on my Harry Potter quilts. I was making 2 of each block at a time, but, stopped when my oldest graduated college last year. I do plan on adding a dragon, reading the Marauders Map on the top of the bookcase, and, the sword of Gryffindor, leaning against the side of the bookcase (its a new, free paper pieced pattern). Have fun with yours.
Are you going to do a quilt-along for your POD quilt? I've always wanted to make one!
