Yes, I really am sewing. I'm just not finishing much. This week I bought fabric to make a pillowcase for my friend's mom's birthday.

Spider Web and Vine
The next task in the crazy quilting class is a spider web with a vine or branch and foliage.
I am pretty happy with my web and vine. A few of my leaves are wonky, but not bad enough to rip out. I am less pleased with my spider. I went to AC Moore yesterday looking for interesting oval beads, but there were very few to choose from. The legs of my spider are a little too close to the beads, but again, not bad enough to rip out.
I love this class! It is so much fun not having a pattern to follow.

First Daffodil and Progress Report
Here, amid the weeds, is my first daffodil of the season:
A week and a half ago, these flowers were covered in 14 inches of snow! We might get a few flurries tonight, but in my mind, spring is almost here! I keep track of when the first daffodil blooms each year, and I'm so glad they are early this year.
Year Date of First Bloom
2012 before 2/1/12
2013 2/21/13
2014 3/10/14
2015 3/13/15
I have been working on Gyleen's mystery quilt. I think we are up to clue 5. Some of the quilts I've seen have been beautiful. Mine not so much! The nicest thing I can say about this quilt so far is that it is helping me use up my scraps. I believe someone will be glad to receive it anyway because even an ugly quilt will keep you warm.

I've also been working on my ICQC 3 class. I completed the embroidered tree with leaves.

New Projects! ICQC3 and Trent's Quilt
This week I started two new projects. One of them is a quilt for my nephew who graduates from high school in June. Here is the basic plan:
I was originally going to make a one block wonder quilt for him, but I had difficulty finding prints that would work in colors what weren't too feminine. I decided on a bargello pattern after seeing how many beautiful grays and tans the quilt store had. I threw in the dark red for contrast, and I really like how it is coming along!
The second project is one of Kathy Shaw's intermediate crazy quilting class. I've only done 1/2 of step one so far, but already I'm in love! This is my version of the twisted tree:
What I like best about this technique is that there is no marking on the fabric, you just choose your threads, twist and couch. It was a lot of fun and not a lot of planning. Kathy stresses planning your crazy quilt blocks, so that they stay balanced. That's not how I work. Pre-planning anything causes me a lot of anxiety and over-thinking. I'm much happier just jumping in and starting to stitch. I'll worry about balancing the block later.

Stash Report, RSC: Done with Blue!
My nephew graduates from high school in June, so I bought fabric this week to make his graduation quilt. It is going to be a bargello pattern, and I'm making it up as I go along. So much fun!
I also bought fabric to make crazy quilt blocks. I'm taking another online crazy quilting class from Kathy Shaw and have decided to make neutral colored hexagons to stitch on. The class I'm taking is focused on embroidery. I can't wait to get started on it!

My numbers would look a lot better if I'd just get the borders on Allietare. I've totally lost my motivation to finish that quilt. I spent a lot of time last week making blue string blocks. Then I made neutral string blocks instead of working on the borders.
Today is the last day of Blue in the Rainbow Scrap Quilt Along. I'm tired of blue! Final count: 1 inverted square block, twenty-nine 61/2 inch string blocks and eight 71/2 inch impov blocks. January isn't over, but I'm done with blue for a while!

Indoor Flowers
The tulips I tried to force this year were terrible. They came up normally, but the leaves were very pale green. I thought this was because we had so many gray days here, and they weren't getting enough light. They formed buds, but eventually the leaves got black spots on them. Mold? Fungus? I'm sure it wasn't over watering. The pot I gave to my neighbor did the exact same thing even though hers were in a much brighter location. Only a couple of the bulbs bloomed, and they were misshapen.
The daffodils went much better. These are tete a tete daffodils. They stay very short when I plant them outside. Inside they bloom and then keep growing taller.
The amaryllis bulb I planted right before Christmas finally bloomed this week. I didn't think it would every stop growing! I was afraid this one would break it got so tall. With flowers this dramatic, no one notices the unattractive support I made out of wire hangers.
My Christmas cactus always flowers around Thanksgiving. This year I only had about half the blooms of years past. Maybe it needs some fertilizer. This isn't my favorite indoor plant. The flowers are gaudy, and went it is done blooming, it drops them all over the floor. I like it best when the buds are closed, right before it blooms.

Stash Report, Snow Report
I added 3 more yards to my stash this week (backing for Wild and Goosey), and I took a quilt to the longarmer, so my numbers should improve soon.

As far as the snow goes, we got about 14 inches. The last of our boys went off to college in August, so I got my husband a snowblower for Christmas. I thought he might use it a few times a season, but he has used it 5 times over the past 3 days! Pretty funny considering it was 70 degrees Christmas day. He is the envy of the cul de sac now, and I think my siblings in Fredericksburg, VA (about 2 feet) and Loudon County, VA (30+inches) might be purchasing one very soon.
